Welcome to church today!  A Christin prayer from the collection of prayers in the book, The Valley of Vision, makes the following petition to God. “O God, the Eternal All, help me [and all of us] to know:

–that all things are shadows, but thou art the substance,

–all things are quicksands, but thou art the mountain,

–all things are shifting, but thou art the anchor,

–all things are ignorance, but thou art wisdom…..”

Surely, under the blessing of God Triune, isn’t this prayer often answered in the way of the Christian worship services each Sunday? “May God once again so bless us today then too, under the ministry of His Gospel Word by His Spirit. Thanks God for bringing us into Your spacious banqueting House! In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Quotes to reflect on:

God gave you a gift of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say, “Thank you?” William Ward

If any man should ask me what is the first, second, and third part of being a Christian, I must answer, “Action!” Thomas Brooks

“If your repentance has not changed your life, you need to repent of your repentance.” Steve Lawson

“Holiness is the fruit of Trinitarian grace, of the Father sending His Son into the world and His Spirit into our hearts.” John Stott

“True spiritual growth will always result in a greater realization of our weakness and a greater dependence upon God’s strength.” Paul Washer

“If you go to church or Sunday School you will hear about God and Jesus, about the cross and sin week after week.  Maybe you sometimes feel that you would like to hear something different, but the gospel message is the most important one you can ever hear, and also, even after a lifetime of hearing about these things, there will always be something more for you to learn.  You might like to ask an elderly Christian, ‘Do you understand everything about the Lord Jesus Christ? Do you understand all the Bible?’  You will soon discover that even the most mature Christian is still a learner, and that we can never know too much about the Savior. The apostle Paul had the right idea.  He wrote, For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.’ [I Corinthians 2:2].” From 52 Spurgeon Stories for Children by Tony Hutter

“How unspeakably wonderful to know that all our concerns are held in hands that bled for us.”  John Newton

Christian recreation     (copied from the Langley FRC July 2 bulletin)

“All work makes a man a sorry slave.

All play makes him a sorrier fool.

The wise person avoids both extremes.

Whatever makes . . .

your body healthier,

your mind happier, and

your immortal soul purer,

is Christian recreation.

Many confound innocent recreation with sinful pleasures. One is right and the other is ruinous. Everything that . . .

rests my body or mind,

improves my health, and

elevates my soul,

is commendable.

Everything that stimulates my lustful propensities, until I become a walking maniac — everything that debauches my body, weakens my conscience, excites impure thoughts, and makes my soul a horrendous house of imagery — everything that makes me forget God and eternity — is dangerous, and in the last damnable.”   Theodore Cuyler, 1858
