Christmas Eve, Sunday, December 24, 2017

Welcome to church! To be able to come to church for Christian worship and under the ministry of the gospel word is one of the great privileges and highest blessings here on earth.  We are thankful for all visitors too who come to join us today, especially as almost half the congregation is away visiting with family and friends in this holiday season. Please stay awhile after church for a time of fellowship and refreshments. There will be no Sunday school classes today. They will restart, God willing, on the first Sunday of the new year, January 7, 2018.

Our Christmas Day worship service tomorrow begins at 10 A.M. Everyone is most welcome to attend this special service in praise to God for sending His Son in the fullness of time to serve as promised Redeemer.  Next week Monday being New Year’s Day, January 1, 2018 we also have a special worship service again beginning at 10:00 A.M.  How special to end the year 2017 on the last day thereof worshipping in God’s House and then to begin the New Year 2018 on the first day thereof worshipping in God’s House. “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Psalm 90:12.

Some quotes to reflect on:

“Love is not maximum emotion. Love is maximum commitment.”  Sinclair Ferguson

“We don’t become Christians by changing bad habits. We change bad habits because Christ becomes precious to us.” William Boekestein

“[Jesus] not only performs miracles, but in his person is himself the greatest miracle. As the Incarnate, Spirit-conceived, risen and glorified Son of God, he is himself the greatest miracle, the author of the recreation of all things, the first born of the dead, preeminent in everything. (Col.1:18)”  Herman Bavinck

“When God therefore puts the question, who maketh thee to differ? And what hast thou that thou hast not received? Let thy soul, reader, answer it with all humility and thankfulness; ’tis thou, Lord, thou only, that madest me to differ from another, and what I have received, I have received from thy free grace.” John Flavel.

“I think we are witnessing the breakdown of politics. I think even the world is seeing that.” Dr. M.L. Jones

“. . . and he called his name Jesus”  (Matthew 1: 25)  “The name Jesus means ‘Saviour’.  It is the same name as Joshua in the Old Testament.  It is given to our Lord because ‘He saves his people from their sins’.  This is His special office.  He saves them from the guilt of sin, by washing them in His own atoning blood.  He saves them from the dominion of sin, by putting in their hearts the sanctifying Spirit.  He saves them from the presence of sin, when He takes them out of this world to rest with Him.  He will save them from all the consequences of sin, when He shall give them a glorious body at the last day.  J.C. Ryle  in  Expository Thougths on Matthew  (copied from Langley FRC Dec. 17 bulletin)
