Welcome to churchthis first Sunday of 2019! What a blessing that God ordained one day in seven as a day of Sabbath rest and worship before Him. May God Triune bless us with an eternal perspective in all our ways every day of this new year too, and may each Sunday in our worship services be such highlights for us, in ever seeking and serving the LORD in all our ways, for as long as we live.  In this way, we can truly can say, whatever we face, a very happy new year to you all!

Quotes worth reflecting on:

“Of two evils, choose neither.” C. H. Spurgeon

“Teach me, my God and King, In all things Thee to see,

And what I do in anything, To do it as for Thee.” George Herbert

“You may as soon fill a bag with wisdom, a chest with virtue, or a circle with a triangle, as the heart of man with anything here below.” Thomas Brooks

“A true and faithful Christian does not make holy living an accidental thing. It is his great concern. As the business of the soldier is to fight, so the business of the Christian is to be like Christ.” Jonathan Edwards

“Were it not for Christ and the mission He gave to the apostles, we would all be completely in the darkness of paganism.” From RHSB note 1 on Matthew 10.

If you please God, it does not matter whom you displease. And if you displease Him, it does not matter whom you please.” Steven J. Lawson

“The [Synod of Dort] combines the third and fourth heads to show that total [radical] depravity is maintained only when the necessity of irresistible grace is taught.” R. Godfrey

PRAYER:

     “O God, from whom to be turned is to fall,

     to whom to be turned is to rise,

     and with whom to stand

     is to abide forever;

     grant us in all our duties your help,

     in all our perplexities your guidance,

     in all our dangers your protection,

     and in all our sorrows your peace,

        through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Augustine of Hippo (354-430)

DAGON before the ARK  (See Scripture reading, I Samuel 5.)

    When first to make my heart his own,

    The Lord revealed his mighty grace;

    Self reigned, like Dagon, on the throne,

    But could not long maintain its place.

    It fell, and owned the pow’r divine,

    (Grace can with ease the vict’ry gain)

    But soon this wretched heart of mine,

    Contrived to set it up again.

    Again the LORD his name proclaimed,

    And brought the hateful idol low;

    Then self, like Dagon, broken, maimed,

    Seemed to receive a mortal blow.

    Yet self is not of life bereft,

    Nor ceases to oppose his will;

    Though but a maimed stump be left,

    ‘Tis Dagon, ’tis an idol still.

    Lord! must I always guilty prove,

    And idols in my heart have room?

    Oh! let the, fire of heavenly love,

    The very stump of self consume.        John Newton (1725-1807)
